LAMBA and the Internet

LAMBA has a growing presence on the internet. We use social media, the website, and the forum to try to convey all the information and activities in the Linn County, Iowa area. We also have a traditional phone line that we try to keep up to date with the latest trail conditions. The left column of the main website has links to some of the ways we try to connect and interact with members of our community.

Most of the website updates are automated so we can present as much information as possible with the least amount of work by our dedicated volunteers. Utilizing these websites and services we can send 1 notice and people can receive it how they choose. Email, instant message, text message, or just straight from the website are all viable options.

Another great thing about our current website and forum system is the use of RSS feeds. RSS feeds are like creating your own newspaper with only the information you want to see. This newpaper updates as often as you want but typically it is hourly. Using an “RSS aggregator” like Google Reader you can view the updates as headlines only or with the full body of text from the article. When you see a website you would like to read on a regular basis but don’t want to have to go back everyday to check for new stuff, you can add its RSS feed to your RSS aggregator program. Our forum and our website publish this RSS feed every 1 – 4 hours with our latest updates. You don’t even have to come back to our website to check for updates. All the updates from all of the websites you think are interesting are brought together in 1 place.

The details of how we make all these things work together are generally boring and involve bash scripts on a Linux computer. We are happy to tell you how they work if you email us or use one of the services listed above to contact us.
